Make a guest tips map in Google My Maps

By M. Moes · Published on 22 October 2026

If you want to make a Google map with tips for your guests, Google My Maps is made for that. You choose the places, add a short text to each and share the map. It costs no money. It does cost time, especially if you want to keep the map current.

How to make a map in My Maps

  1. Open Google My Maps and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Choose Create a new map and give it a name.
  3. Search for a place and add it to your map. Repeat that for every tip.
  4. Add a short description to each place and pick a colour or icon.
  5. Share the map with the Share button, or embed it on your website from the map's menu.

The names of the buttons can change. Google's own help pages are then the reference.

What it costs you

You decide which places appear, and competitors are not on the map unless you add them. The drawback is time and upkeep. You add every place by hand. If a restaurant closes or a museum changes its opening hours, you only find out when a guest tells you.

When another approach is easier

NearPin shows the places around your location on a map without you adding them. The data comes from OpenStreetMap and is updated weekly. It is not always perfect, because it depends on what has been entered there. You block places you do not want to show and add the widget with one script tag. You can try it free for 14 days.

Tips for accommodations

What is there to do nearby? Guests ask first

Guests almost always ask at check-in what there is to do nearby. If your website answers that, you have to repeat it less often at the front desk.
